Dialogue Writing | How to Write a Dialogue?
A dialogue is a conversation between two people. Keep the following points in mind while drafting a dialogue :
- As dialogue is a spontaneous conversation, keep it simple and short.
- Make a rough draft keeping in mind the subject of the dialogue/length/easy words/short sentences etc.
- While writing a dialogue remember to use very short sentence sometimes.
- Don't allow any of your characters to dominate the conversation. Allow sufficient turns between two speakers.
- Use exclamation like surprise, irritation, pleasure in your dialogue according to the context. For Example,
- Good Heavens ! You don't say so !( Surprise)
- O dear ! ( irritation)
- How nice of you! ( Pleasure)
- Don't write ungrammatical dialogue. Write dialogue using a variety of tenses, appropriate prepositions, subject-verb Agreement etc.
- Don't use slangs/abusive words while writing dialogues.
- Make it spontaneous like the real-life conversation.
- Use humour, polite language in your dialogue.

SAMPLE DIALOGUE 1
Customer : Can I have a small bottle of tomato sauce ?
Shopkeeper : Sorry, I have only big bottles.
Customer : When will it be available ?
Shopkeeper : I can give it to you tomorrow.
Customer : Thank you, then I will come for it tomorrow.
SAMPLE DIALOGUE 2
Ali: Omar, why don't you go home now?
Omar: I wish I went home now.
Omar : Why ? I can drop you on my way back home.
Omar: I have no home.
Ali: Where have you come from?
Omar: From Tunisia.
SAMPLE DIALOGUE 3
Attendant : A person wants to see you, sir.
Principal : Did you ask him his name?
Attendant : Sorry, sir. I didn't. Shall I go and ask him?
Principal : Yes, of course. Go and tell me soon who he is.
SAMPLE DIALOGUE 4
Veena : Did you watch the IPL Cricket match yesterday?Megha : I'm afraid, I didn't.
Veena : You should have watched. The Deccan Chargers played very well.
Megha : I will surely watch their next match. Isn't it on this Friday? Veena : Yes, it is.
